“To make Western Australian communities safer though targeted and coordinated crime prevention and crime reduction initiatives.”
Principles
The Office of Crime Prevention is guided by the principles of the State Community Safety and Crime Prevention Strategy, developed by the Geoff Gallop State Labor Govenment in 2004.
Sustainability
For crime prevention to be sustained there needs to be a good quality of life in a community. The economic, social and environmental systems within our communities need to be examined and altered to achieve this.
Working better together
The prevention and reduction of crime in the community is not the sole responsibility of any one person, agency or institution. An integrated whole-of-government and whole-of-community approach is required to make our community safer.
Inclusiveness
Decision-making about how to address successfully community safety and crime prevention issues will be based on community input. Consistent, fair and balanced decisions will be made after including the views and concerns of all community groups, including Indigenous people, minority groups and communities at greatest risk.
Targeted efforts
Data about emerging crime trends, including the volume, impact, extent and location of offences in the community will guide decisions about where best to direct community safety and crime prevention efforts.
Evidence-based decision making
Research investigating which initiatives succeed in achieving sustainable crime prevention outcomes will guide decisions on how to invest crime prevention resources.
Focusing on results
Performance measures will be used to set clear targets for the improvement of each initiative.
Sharing knowledge
Knowledge and ideas are to be shared to support communities in developing and implementing their own Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plans.
